Ringworm

A common fungal infection causing ring-shaped, scaly, itchy patches — how it spreads, how it differs from other rashes, and how it is treated.

Overview

Ringworm (tinea) is a fungal infection of the skin, not a worm. It causes characteristic ring-shaped patches — red, scaly, slightly raised at the edge, and often clearer in the centre — that slowly expand outward. It is common, contagious, and favourably treated. This page focuses on ringworm of the body; the broader overview of fungal skin infections is on the Fungal Skin Infection page.

How it spreads

  • Direct skin-to-skin contact with an affected person or animal.
  • Sharing towels, clothing, bedsheets, or personal items.
  • Warm, humid environments and communal changing areas.
  • Existing athlete’s foot spreading to the body.

Distinguishing it from other rashes

The ring shape with an active scaly border and central clearing helps distinguish ringworm from other rashes such as eczema (which is drier and ill-defined), psoriasis, or a granuloma. A skin scraping confirms the diagnosis when the appearance is unclear. See Eczema / Dermatitis and Skin Rash.

Evaluation and management

Diagnosis is usually clinical; a scraping for microscopy and culture is sent when needed. Treatment uses antifungal creams for limited patches and antifungal tablets for widespread, scalp, or nail involvement. Affected household members and pets should be checked, and personal items should not be shared. Recurrent ringworm prompts a blood sugar check. See Fungal Skin Infection and Diabetes & Metabolic Health.

Warning signs — seek prompt care

  • A patch that becomes red, hot, painful or weepy — possible bacterial infection on top of the fungal rash.
  • Spreading rash with fever — needs prompt assessment.
