Fever & Infectious Diseases
COVID-19 and Respiratory Viral Illness
COVID-19 and other respiratory viral infections — fever with cough or breathlessness, testing, isolation, and the warning signs for urgent care.

Overview
COVID-19 and other respiratory viral illnesses cause fever with cough, sore throat, runny nose, body ache and sometimes breathlessness or loss of smell and taste. Most cases are mild and recover with supportive care, but some — especially in older adults and those with long-term conditions — can become serious. Testing, appropriate isolation and recognising warning signs matter.
Symptoms
Evaluation
Diagnosis is confirmed with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR or rapid antigen) when needed. A chest examination and oxygen check are performed when breathlessness is present; a chest X-ray or CT is ordered for moderate-to-severe illness. Blood tests and inflammatory markers may be checked in severe cases.
Management
Mild illness is managed with rest, hydration, fever-reducing medicine and isolation as advised. Specific treatment is considered for high-risk people or worsening illness. Breathlessness, low oxygen or chest involvement need prompt hospital assessment. Vaccination and hygiene measures reduce risk.
Warning signs — seek urgent care
- Breathlessness, chest pain or bluish lips.
- Low oxygen levels on a pulse oximeter.
- Confusion, drowsiness or inability to stay awake.
- Persistent high fever or worsening despite care.
- Bluish or pale, cold skin.
