Urinary Problems
Abnormal Urine Test Results
A urine report mentioning protein, blood, pus cells, sugar or crystals — what each finding may mean and the evaluation that follows, without duplicating disease pages.

Overview
A urine routine and microscopy report can flag several findings — protein, blood, pus cells, sugar, casts or crystals — and an abnormal result often causes concern. Most findings are not diagnoses in themselves; they are clues that guide further evaluation. This page focuses on interpreting urine test results in plain terms and linking to the relevant underlying conditions, rather than duplicating the disease pages.
Common findings and what they may mean
- Protein or albumin — a leak from the kidney filters; see Protein in Urine and Albuminuria.
- Blood (haematuria) — may come from the kidneys or urinary tract; see Blood in Urine.
- Pus cells or bacteria — suggest a urinary tract infection; see Urinary Tract Infection.
- Sugar in the urine — points to high blood sugar; see Diabetes & Metabolic Health.
- Casts — tiny structures that can indicate kidney inflammation or damage.
- Crystals — may relate to stones or concentrated urine; see Cloudy Urine.
- Ketones — can appear in uncontrolled diabetes or fasting; see High Blood Sugar.
Evaluation and investigations
A single abnormal finding is interpreted in context — symptoms, existing conditions, and medicines — and often repeated with a properly collected midstream sample before conclusions are drawn. Depending on the finding, further tests may include a urine culture, urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio, kidney function tests, blood sugar or HbA1c, and an ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder. See Abnormal Test Results.
Management overview
Management is directed at the underlying cause identified by the evaluation, not at the finding itself. An infection is treated, diabetes is controlled, kidney-related causes are managed through the Kidney Health service, and harmless findings are reassured once serious causes are excluded. The aim is to interpret the result correctly and act on the cause, not to treat a number in isolation.
Follow-up and monitoring
Follow-up confirms the abnormal finding has resolved or is stable. Persistent abnormalities are monitored and investigated according to the underlying cause. See Kidney Health Monitoring and Preventive Health & Health Check-ups.
Warning signs — seek prompt care
- Persistent blood in the urine on testing — needs assessment.
- Persistent protein with swelling — needs assessment for kidney involvement.
- Pus cells with fever and burning — possible infection.
- Sugar in the urine with thirst and weight loss — check blood sugar for diabetes.
