Urinary Problems
Cloudy Urine
Urine that looks cloudy or murky — common causes from infection and crystals to phosphate and dietary factors, and when it needs assessment.

Overview
Cloudy urine is urine that appears murky or hazy instead of clear. It is a common observation and often harmless — related to diet, crystals or phosphate — but it can also be a sign of a urinary tract infection, especially when accompanied by burning, frequency or a strong smell. The accompanying symptoms determine whether cloudiness needs investigation or simple reassurance.
Common causes
- Urinary tract infection — often with burning, frequency, urgency and a strong smell.
- Phosphates in the urine, common after meals, causing harmless cloudiness.
- Crystals from salts in the urine, sometimes related to stones.
- Vaginal or urethral discharge contaminating the sample.
- Dehydration and concentrated urine.
- Kidney-related causes, occasionally.
Symptoms and associated features
Cloudiness alone, with no other symptoms and a clear urine test, is usually harmless. Features that warrant assessment include burning, frequency, urgency, blood in the urine, a strong or unpleasant smell, fever, lower abdominal or back pain, and passing small amounts frequently. A properly collected midstream sample avoids contamination that can falsely cloud the urine.
Evaluation and investigations
Evaluation reviews the symptom pattern and examines when needed. A urine routine and microscopy identifies pus cells, blood, crystals or bacteria; a urine culture is sent when infection is suspected. Blood sugar is checked when diabetes is a possibility. See Urinary Tract Infection and Abnormal Urine Test Results.
Management overview
Management treats the cause. A confirmed infection is treated with the right antibiotic and the urine re-checked. Harmless causes — phosphates, crystals, mild dehydration — are managed with hydration and dietary advice, with reassurance once the urine test is clear. Stones or structural causes are addressed when found.
Follow-up and monitoring
A follow-up urine test confirms infection has cleared or that the cloudiness has resolved. Persistent cloudiness despite a clear test is reassured; persistent cloudiness with abnormal findings is investigated further.
Warning signs — seek prompt care
- Cloudy urine with burning, frequency and fever — possible infection.
- Cloudy urine with visible blood.
- Cloudy urine with back or flank pain and fever — possible kidney infection.
- Cloudy urine that persists despite good hydration.
