Asthma Symptoms
Recognising the symptoms of asthma — wheeze, breathlessness, chest tightness and cough, night-time patterns, and how symptoms are tracked.

Overview
This page focuses on recognising and tracking the symptoms of asthma, so that the pattern can be discussed with Dr. Nayak and matched to the right treatment. The full explanation of asthma as a condition — its causes, diagnosis and inhaler treatment — is on the main Asthma page; this page links to it rather than repeating that content.
Typical symptoms
- Wheezing — a whistling sound, especially on breathing out.
- Breathlessness — particularly with exertion or triggers.
- Chest tightness — a feeling of squeezing or pressure in the chest.
- Cough — often dry, worse at night or early morning, or with triggers.
- Symptoms that come and go, and vary from day to day.
Patterns that suggest asthma
Symptoms that are worse at night or in the early morning, brought on by triggers such as dust, cold air, exercise or allergens, and that respond to a reliever inhaler, are characteristic. A history of allergies, eczema or hay fever, or a family history of asthma, increases the likelihood. Some people have cough-variant asthma, where a dry cough is the main symptom rather than wheeze.
Tracking symptoms
Keeping a symptom and peak-flow diary — recording wheeze, breathlessness, night waking, reliever use and peak flow readings — helps assess control and guide treatment changes. Frequent reliever use, night waking, or activity limitation are signs that asthma is not well controlled and the treatment plan needs review.
Warning signs — seek urgent care
- Symptoms rapidly worsening and not responding to the reliever inhaler.
- Breathlessness at rest or inability to speak full sentences.
- Bluish lips or very low peak flow.
