Weight-related Joint Pain
How excess weight loads the weight-bearing joints and drives osteoarthritis, why weight loss relieves joint pain, and how joint and weight care are managed together.

Overview
Excess weight places extra mechanical load on the weight-bearing joints — especially the knees, hips and lower back — and is one of the strongest risk factors for osteoarthritis of the knee. It also contributes to joint pain through low-grade inflammation. The relationship is reversible: weight loss relieves joint pain and slows the progression of osteoarthritis. This page covers the weight-related angle; broader joint and muscle care is on the Joint, Muscle & Rheumatology service.
How weight affects joints
Every step transmits a load of several times body weight through the knees, so even modest excess weight multiplies the stress on the joint surfaces over thousands of steps a day. Visceral fat also releases inflammatory signals that affect joint tissues. The result is earlier and faster osteoarthritis, particularly in the knees, and more frequent lower-back pain.
Why weight loss helps
Losing weight reduces the load on the joints and the inflammatory drive, which often reduces pain and improves mobility more than expected for the amount lost. Even a 5–10% loss can meaningfully relieve knee pain. Improved mobility in turn makes activity easier, creating a positive cycle.
Management overview
Management combines weight loss with joint care — low-impact activity (such as walking, cycling or swimming) that protects the joints while building strength, pain management, and assessment of any specific joint problem. Activity is built up safely to avoid aggravating a painful joint. See Joint, Muscle & Rheumatology and Medical Weight Management.
