Healthy Weight Loss
What healthy, sustainable weight loss looks like — the eating pattern, activity, sleep and behaviour principles that produce steady results without restrictive dieting.

Overview
Healthy weight loss is steady, sustainable loss achieved through changes you can keep to long-term, rather than rapid loss from a restrictive diet that is abandoned and then regained. The aim is a realistic target (often a sustained 5–10% loss to start), reached slowly and maintained. This page covers the principles; the structured medical programme is on the Medical Weight Management page.
Eating principles
- Reduce processed foods, refined carbohydrates and sugary drinks.
- Increase vegetables, fruit, protein and whole foods.
- Manage portions and be aware of snacks, cooking oils and drinks.
- Choose an eating pattern you can sustain — there is no single “best” diet.
- Be mindful of eating triggers, hunger and fullness.
Activity principles
- Build everyday movement back into the day.
- Find activities you enjoy so they last.
- Include resistance exercise to preserve muscle during weight loss.
- Increase amount and intensity gradually.
- Protect painful joints with low-impact activity where needed (see Weight-related Joint Pain).
Sleep, stress and behaviour
Poor sleep and chronic stress raise hunger and cravings and make weight loss harder, so both are addressed. Behaviour change — realistic goals, tracking progress, anticipating setbacks and building habits — is what turns a short effort into a long-term result. Aiming for 0.5–1 kg per week is a reasonable, sustainable pace for most people.
What to avoid
Very restrictive diets, “detox” or crash approaches, and any plan promising rapid or guaranteed loss are not sustainable and often followed by regain — sometimes to a higher weight. No approach guarantees a specific amount of loss. See Weight Loss Plateau and Weight Regain for the common hurdles.
