Dyslipidaemia

The broader medical term for abnormal blood-fat patterns — including mixed high cholesterol and triglycerides — and how it is assessed and treated.

Overview

Dyslipidaemia is the medical term for any abnormal pattern of fats (lipids) in the blood — not only high LDL cholesterol, but also low HDL, high triglycerides, or a combination. It is a more complete way of describing lipid abnormalities than “high cholesterol” alone, because the balance between these fats matters as much as any single value. Dyslipidaemia is a major contributor to atherosclerosis — the build-up of plaque in arteries that leads to heart attack and stroke.

This page covers dyslipidaemia as a clinical pattern. For the patient-friendly basics of cholesterol, see High Cholesterol; for how it feeds into overall risk, see Cardiovascular Risk Assessment.

Common patterns

  • High LDL with normal other fats — the classic “high cholesterol.”
  • High triglycerides with low HDL — common in diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome.
  • Mixed dyslipidaemia — raised LDL and triglycerides with low HDL.
  • Isolated low HDL — sometimes inherited, sometimes lifestyle-related.
  • Very high triglycerides — can cause pancreatitis and needs specific management.

Causes

  • Diet high in saturated fats, refined carbohydrates and sugars.
  • Excess weight, inactivity and high alcohol intake.
  • Type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance.
  • Hypothyroidism, kidney disease and certain medicines.
  • Inherited lipid disorders — sometimes causing very high levels from a young age.

Assessment

  • A fasting or non-fasting lipid profile — total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides.
  • Interpretation alongside overall cardiovascular risk, not in isolation.
  • Screening for diabetes, thyroid and kidney disease as underlying causes.
  • Review of family history for inherited patterns.
  • Repeat testing to confirm and to track the response to treatment.

Treatment approach

Treatment targets the specific abnormal pattern and your overall risk. Lifestyle — diet, activity, weight, alcohol — is the foundation throughout. Statins are the mainstay when LDL is high or overall risk is raised; other agents are added for high triglycerides or mixed patterns where needed. Any underlying cause (diabetes, thyroid, kidney) is treated in parallel. Targets are tighter for people with diabetes or existing cardiovascular disease.

How we help

Dr. Nayak identifies the specific lipid pattern, screens for underlying causes, and builds a treatment plan combining lifestyle and medication tailored to your overall risk. Repeat testing confirms the response, and medicines are reviewed for effect and tolerance. Consultations are available in-clinic in Bhubaneswar and over teleconsultation.
