Fatigue, Weakness & General Symptoms

General Health Check for Persistent Symptoms

When non-specific symptoms have lasted weeks without a clear cause, a structured general health check — history, examination and a targeted test panel — finds the cause or gives confident reassurance.

Overview

A general health check for persistent symptoms is the structured assessment used when someone has felt unwell for weeks with non-specific symptoms — tiredness, weakness, low energy, malaise, mild weight change or night sweats — but no clear cause has emerged. Rather than treating each symptom in isolation or ordering an unguided bundle of tests, it combines a careful history, a targeted examination and a focused test panel to either find the treatable cause or give confident reassurance. It is the right step when symptoms persist beyond what a short period of rest or a single test could explain.

When a general health check is the right step

  • Tiredness, weakness or low energy persisting for several weeks.
  • A general feeling of being unwell (malaise) without an obvious cause.
  • Mild unintended weight change.
  • Night sweats without a clear explanation.
  • Symptoms that have already had one or two normal tests but have not settled.
  • A desire for a structured review before attributing symptoms to stress or age.

What the assessment includes

The check begins with a detailed history — the symptom pattern, sleep, diet, weight trend, medicines, existing conditions, and family history — followed by an examination targeted to the symptoms. A focused test panel typically includes a complete blood count, iron studies and ferritin, vitamin B12, folate and vitamin D, blood sugar or HbA1c, thyroid function tests, kidney and liver function, electrolytes, inflammatory markers (ESR, CRP) where indicated, a urine routine, and an ECG when relevant. Further tests are added only if the pattern points to them. See Abnormal Test Results and Preventive Health & Health Check-ups.

Management overview

Management follows what the assessment finds. A treatable cause — anaemia, a thyroid disorder, diabetes, a deficiency, an infection — is managed specifically, and the symptoms usually improve as it resolves. When the assessment is normal, the focus shifts to sleep, nutrition, activity, stress and mood, with a clear plan and planned follow-up rather than repeated unplanned testing. The aim is a confident explanation, not an open-ended label.

Follow-up and monitoring

Follow-up confirms the symptoms are improving and any abnormal results have normalised with treatment. Persistent symptoms despite a normal assessment are reviewed for less common causes and referred for specialist assessment when appropriate. See Preventive Health & Health Check-ups.

Warning signs — seek prompt care

  • Persistent symptoms with unintended weight loss, fever or night sweats.
  • Symptoms with chest pain, breathlessness at rest or fainting.
  • Sudden one-sided weakness, slurred speech or severe dizziness — emergency.
  • Symptoms that are progressively worsening rather than fluctuating.
