Thyroid Disorders
Thyroid-related Hair Loss
How both under- and overactive thyroid can cause hair thinning, when it is truly thyroid-related, and how it is assessed alongside other common causes.

Overview
Hair loss is a well-recognised symptom of thyroid imbalance — both under- and overactivity can cause generalised thinning, and the hair often becomes dry, coarse or brittle. Once thyroid hormone is normalised, thyroid-related hair loss usually recovers over several months. However, hair loss has many other common causes, so the thyroid is one part of a broader assessment rather than the automatic answer.
This page is about the hair-loss symptom. For the conditions, see Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism.
When hair loss may be thyroid-related
- Generalised thinning rather than patchy loss.
- Dry, coarse or brittle hair alongside other thyroid symptoms.
- An abnormal TSH on testing.
- Hair loss persisting despite a normal TSH on the correct dose — usually non-thyroid.
Other common causes to check
- Iron deficiency and low ferritin — a very common cause in women.
- Vitamin D and B12 deficiency.
- Telogen effluvium after illness, stress, pregnancy or weight loss.
- Female or male pattern hair loss.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome and other hormonal causes.
- Certain medicines.
Evaluation
- TSH and free T4.
- Iron studies and ferritin.
- Vitamin D and B12.
- Review of pattern, timing and other symptoms.
Management
If the thyroid is abnormal, treating it correctly is the first step and hair usually recovers. If the thyroid is normal or well controlled, the other causes — especially iron deficiency — are identified and treated. Over-treating the thyroid to improve hair is counterproductive, as excess hormone can itself worsen hair loss.
