Weight Loss Plateau
Why weight loss stalls after initial success, what is and is not happening, and how a structured review gets progress moving again realistically.

Overview
A weight-loss plateau is a period — often several weeks — where weight stops falling despite continuing the plan. It is extremely common and is not a failure; it reflects the body’s natural adaptation to weight loss. This page focuses on the plateau as a specific patient concern; the structured plan is on the Medical Weight Management page, and the broader reasons loss can be hard on the Difficulty Losing Weight page.
Why plateaus happen
- Metabolic adaptation — energy use falls as body weight falls.
- Loss of muscle if activity lacks resistance, lowering energy use.
- Unnoticed drift in intake — portions or snacks creeping back up.
- Reduced non-exercise activity as the body subconsciously moves less.
- Water balance masking fat loss on the scale.
- Improved fitness meaning the same activity burns fewer calories.
What to do
A review checks the eating and activity pattern honestly (often with a diary), confirms that fat loss may still be occurring even when the scale is flat, and adjusts the plan — usually by increasing activity (including resistance exercise to restore muscle and metabolic rate), refining the eating pattern, and re-setting expectations. Persistence through a plateau, with sensible adjustments, is usually what resumes progress. Crash restriction is not the answer and often backfires.
When to look deeper
If the plateau is long, or accompanied by new fatigue, cold intolerance or other symptoms, a check for medical contributors (such as an underactive thyroid) is worthwhile. See Difficulty Losing Weight and Obesity and Thyroid Disorders.
