High Waist Circumference

What a high waist circumference means as a health measure, how it is measured correctly, and why it is read alongside BMI to judge metabolic risk.

Overview

Waist circumference is a simple measure of abdominal fat. A high value indicates more of the harmful visceral fat that drives diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, and it is one of the defining features of the metabolic syndrome. This page focuses on the measurement and its interpretation; the health consequences of abdominal fat are on the Abdominal Obesity page.

How it is measured

Waist circumference is measured with a tape at the midpoint between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, usually at the level of the navel, with the abdomen relaxed and after breathing out. Measuring it consistently each time matters, because the trend is more useful than any single reading.

What the numbers mean

For South Asian adults, a waist circumference above about 90 cm in men and 80 cm in women is generally considered raised and carries increased metabolic risk; the standard international cut-offs (94 cm men, 80 cm women) are higher. The value is always read alongside BMI, because some people have a “normal” BMI but a high waist — so-called normal-weight central obesity — and still carry meaningful risk.

Why it is read with BMI

BMI shows total weight-for-height; waist circumference shows where the fat is carried. Together they give a far clearer picture of risk than either alone. See BMI and Weight Assessment.

Management overview

A high waist circumference is managed with the same sustainable lifestyle approach as abdominal obesity — reducing refined carbohydrates and sugary drinks, increasing activity including resistance exercise, and addressing sleep and stress — with regular re-measurement to follow the trend. See Healthy Weight Loss.
