Digestive Problems
Nausea
The feeling of being sick — common causes from digestive problems, infection, medicines and migraine, self-care, and when it needs assessment.

Overview
Nausea is the unpleasant sensation of feeling the need to vomit. It is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, and it can arise from many causes — digestive problems such as gastritis, gastroenteritis and reflux; medicines; motion sickness; migraine; pregnancy; or conditions outside the gut such as high or low blood sugar. This page covers nausea as a symptom; Vomiting is covered as a separate page because each can occur alone and points to different causes.
Common causes
- Gastritis, acid reflux and indigestion.
- Gastroenteritis and food poisoning.
- Medicines, including painkillers and some antibiotics.
- Motion sickness.
- Migraine.
- Pregnancy.
- Low or high blood sugar in people with diabetes.
- Other causes, including kidney or liver problems.
Self-care
For mild nausea, simple measures help: take small sips of water or oral rehydration solution, eat bland, easily digested food in small amounts, avoid strong smells and fatty or spicy food, and rest. Fresh air and ginger-based drinks can ease mild nausea. Avoid taking medicines on an empty stomach if they irritate the stomach.
When it needs assessment
- Nausea that is persistent or recurrent.
- Nausea with vomiting that leads to dehydration.
- Nausea with severe abdominal pain.
- Nausea with weight loss or difficulty keeping food down.
- Nausea related to a new medicine.
