Overview

Tingling (pins-and-needles) and numbness are common and have many causes, ranging from entirely harmless to conditions needing prompt attention. The location, how it came on, and what accompanies it determine the urgency. This page covers the symptom in general; for related weakness, see Weakness.

Common causes

  • Peripheral neuropathy — often in diabetes, causing tingling in the feet and hands; see Diabetes & Metabolic Health.
  • Nerve compression — carpal tunnel syndrome (hand), cervical or lumbar spine problems (limbs).
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency — common in vegetarians and with certain medicines; causes tingling and anaemia.
  • Anxiety and hyperventilation — tingling around the mouth and in the fingers during episodes.
  • Migraine aura — temporary sensory disturbance before or during an attack.
  • Thyroid dysfunction — can contribute to nerve symptoms.
  • Prolonged pressure on a limb (“pins and needles” that resolves quickly).

Evaluation

Evaluation reviews the distribution, onset and accompanying symptoms, and includes a neurological examination. Blood tests check blood sugar, vitamin B12, thyroid function and anaemia. Further tests such as nerve conduction studies are arranged when a specific nerve problem is suspected.

Urgent signs

  • Sudden numbness or tingling on one side of the body, with weakness, slurred speech or facial droop — possible stroke; seek emergency care.
  • Numbness that is rapidly spreading or ascending from the feet upward.
  • Numbness with loss of bowel or bladder control.
  • Numbness after a significant head or spinal injury.
