Diabetes Complications
Understanding the long-term effects of diabetes on the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves and feet — and how good control prevents them.

Overview
Diabetes is called a “silent” condition because it can damage the body gradually over years without causing symptoms. The complications of diabetes mainly affect the heart and blood vessels, the kidneys, the eyes, the nerves and the feet. They are not inevitable — good sugar control, blood pressure management, healthy lifestyle and regular screening dramatically reduce the risk.
This page is the overview of all complications and how they are prevented together. For in-depth detail on any single area, follow the related links below — each has its own dedicated page.
Areas we monitor and protect
Diabetes complications tend to affect the small and large blood vessels throughout the body. The main areas, and what each means, are:
- Heart and blood vessels — diabetes roughly doubles the risk of heart attack and stroke. This is addressed through sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol control together, not sugar alone.
- Kidneys — early leak of protein and falling function, detected by a simple annual urine (ACR) and blood test. See Diabetic Kidney Disease.
- Eyes — retinal changes that can affect vision, caught by a yearly eye check through a referral.
- Nerves — loss of sensation and nerve pain in the feet and hands. See Diabetic Neuropathy.
- Feet — wounds and ulcers from combined nerve and circulation damage, largely preventable with daily foot care. See Diabetic Foot Problems.
Why screening matters
Almost all complications are silent in their early stages. By the time symptoms appear, damage is often advanced. Regular screening — of the kidneys, feet, nerves, eyes and blood pressure — catches problems at the reversible stage, when treatment is most effective. This is why a diabetes review is about far more than the sugar number alone.
Principles of prevention
- Keep HbA1c within your individualised target — steady control protects every organ.
- Control blood pressure as diligently as sugar; both damage blood vessels.
- Manage cholesterol, and avoid smoking.
- Maintain a healthy weight and stay active.
- Attend scheduled screening for kidneys, eyes and feet every year.
- Take prescribed protective medicines consistently, not only when symptoms appear.
How we help
Dr. Nayak builds complication prevention into every diabetes plan: regular screening of the kidneys, feet and nerves, tight control of sugar and blood pressure, and timely referral for eye checks. The aim is to keep you healthy for the long term, not just to improve the next report. Related concerns are also addressed through our kidney, heart-risk and weight-management services. Consultations are available in-clinic in Bhubaneswar and over teleconsultation.
